International Business students visited in Bryssel in the beginning of November as part of “Exploring European Markets” course. One of the places that we visited was Tampere region EU office.
Tampere region EU office has been in Bryssel 20 years, from 1999. Office represent Tampere as well as other municipalities near Tampere (Kangasala, Ylöjärvi, Lempäälä, Nokia, Pirkkala, Orivesi and Vesilahti).
It’s important to have office in Bryssel since they can build up networks and have influence in the EU decision making process.
There are two people working in the office: Director, Hannele Räikkönen and Senior Advisor, European Affairs Petra Kortelainen. They also have rotating trainees from Tampere University, 2 per year.
It was interesting to hear their story and what they actually are doing there. Moreover was nice to hear from everyone how they ended up in Bryssel.
