We are second-year nursing students from Häme University of Applied Sciences. Many prospective applicants surely wonder what studying at a university of applied sciences is like and what is included in the Nursing studies. In this blog post we’ll share our own experiences and provide concrete examples of the content of our studies.
At the beginning of our studies, there was a lot of face-to-face teaching, which was crucial for group bonding. There are also lots of different events for students to spend time with new friends and create unforgettable memories.
Learning practical skills in workshops
In the first few months, we familiarized ourselves with the basics and also got to start the skills workshops, which are everyone’s favorite. In these workshops, we practice essential nursing procedures and technical skills. The workshops have been well-received because getting to practice hands-on is the most effective way to learn. In the skills workshops, we have had the opportunity to practice tasks such as injections, cannulation, taking EKGs, catheterization, and venipuncture.
Remember to take care of your own well-being
As a counterbalance, the beginning of the studies can also feel very demanding, labor-intensive, and stressful. The volume of assignments and the pace of studies can be challenging, and the progress of your studies may seem confusing. In these situations, it is especially important to turn to our tutors and student counsellors for help. It is always possible to slow down or adjust your studies to better suit your needs. Taking care of your own well-being is crucial because student life can, in the best case, be one of the best and most memorable experiences of your life.
