When we think about wood procurement, we often think about forests, machines and getting timber from the forest to the mill and profit or income. But behind all of this, Safety is the most important aspect of forestry work.
Forestry work involves operating heavy forest machine, vehicles, chainsaws, heavy equipment and difficulty working conditions. Due to these dangers, all employees must focus on safety.
Before starting work, its important to comprehend the worksite and identify possible risks. Worker must also ensure that machinery and equipments are in use properly. Wearing appropriate personal protective gear, including a helmets, safety glass, rubber boots, ear protection, gloves, high visibilty clothes, and safety distance can help in safeguarding workers from accident.
What makes forestry work dangerous?
There can be many dangerous situations at a forestry work sites. Like moving machines and vehicles can be very risky if workers are near them. Heavy timber can lead to injuries if it is not handled correctly. Weather conditions, wet surfaces, rough ground, invisible surrounding can also sum to the dangers.
That’s why wearing PPE is very important.
Communication
Good communication can prevent accidents. Workers need to be aware of where the machines and other workers are, and they should be able to easily communicate with the person operating the machines. When you are near a machine, you should stay at a safe distance and follow the signals that everyone has agreed on.
Learn from near misses
A near miss is when something risky almost happens, but no one gets hurt. These situations should not simply be forgotten. Reporting a near miss helps workers learn what went wrong and stops a similar accident from happening again.
Safety before speed
In my own experience working in forestry, I’ve found that staying safe is more important than trying to work quickly. Taking a little more time to check tools, know the working distance, and talk with my team can really help a lot. Knowing the emergency number (112) is a must!
Safety is everyone’s responsibility. By following the steps, using proper safety gear, and helping each other out, we can ensure that getting wood procurement is safer for everyone.
