Israeli architects Iris and <\/span>Zeevik<\/span> Aravot<\/span> visited <\/span>H\u00e4meenlinna<\/span> University Centre <\/span>and wrote some expressions and ideas reflecting to higher education in Israel. The four-year project of Craft, Design and Technology publication <\/span><\/span>(<\/span><\/span>https:\/\/urn.fi\/URN:ISBN:978-951-784-832-9<\/span><\/span><\/a>)<\/span><\/span> connects them to HAMK. Iris <\/span>Aravot<\/span>\u202fwas a member of the editorial board of the project and has worked with some of the authors<\/span> for decades<\/span>. Last July Iris <\/span>Aravot<\/span> with her husband <\/span>Zeevik<\/span> made a four-week journey to Finland visiting numerous cultural events and venues.<\/span><\/span> In the text <\/span>below<\/span>,<\/span> she <\/span>write<\/span>s<\/span> about the<\/span>ir<\/span> day in <\/span>H\u00e4meenlinna<\/span> University Centre<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Our<\/span> first impression was of the green<\/span> surrounding<\/span>, <\/span>the air <\/span>clean <\/span>from dust and the soft light, <\/span>the pleasant spring weather<\/span>. T<\/span>he campus immediately <\/span>impressed with its tranquility and overall cultivation.<\/span> It looked operational<\/span> and modest, <\/span>very beautiful but <\/span>not spectacular for <\/span>the sake of it. The transition from outside <\/span>of the building <\/span>to inside and vice versa was <\/span>gentle<\/span>, not accompanied by sharp temperature differences. <\/span>I<\/span>t felt good. The new building and the old building for conservation, which was converted to a new use, exuded a pleasant feeling and contemporary practicality, <\/span>high <\/span>quality<\/span> <\/span>\u2014 <\/span><\/span>without <\/span>unnecessary <\/span>exaggerations or wink<\/span>s<\/span> to<\/span> short-lived<\/span> fashion<\/span>s<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

These are of course the impressions of architects<\/span> <\/span>\u2014 <\/span><\/span>the first thing<\/span>s<\/span> to catch our attention<\/span>.<\/span> Obviously, w<\/span>e see details<\/span> and materials, <\/span>but above all<\/span>,<\/span> it is the atmosphere<\/span> that we feel<\/span>, something between the objective and the subjective, the surrounding space, which immediately becomes part of the personal interior<\/span>ity. At <\/span>H\u00e4meenlinna<\/span> University Centre <\/span><\/span>it was<\/span><\/span> friendly <\/span>comfort along with practicality.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The academic framework from which <\/span>we<\/span> come is <\/span>the Technion I.I.T.,<\/span> an I<\/span>nstitute<\/span> of Technology <\/span>(https:\/\/www.technion.ac.il\/en\/<\/a>) <\/span>with strong emphasis on research<\/span>. In Israel <\/span>we are not acquainted with a system of<\/span> higher education <\/span>similar to<\/span> the <\/span>concept of <\/span>a <\/span>”University of Applied Science<\/span>s<\/span>”, so we were <\/span>eager<\/span> to receive explanations.<\/span> We found similarities and differences. The most prominent <\/span>feature <\/span>was cooperation with the industry.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Of course, also at the Technion and universities in Israel in general, there is a trend of cooperation with industry, especially in research<\/span> and development<\/span>. <\/span>There are <\/span>also <\/span>other forms of cooperation: <\/span>in my <\/span>(Iris) <\/span>department <\/span>for example, (<\/span>Faculty of <\/span>architecture and <\/span>town<\/span> planning)<\/span>,<\/span> we have defined academic-practical frameworks in recent years that award the students with academic credit along with practical experience. However, the degree of cooperation with the industry as part of the academic studies is <\/span>rather<\/span> limited compared to the applied university<\/span> concept<\/span>. In my <\/span>department<\/span>,<\/span> there are many students who work while studying, some for purely financial reasons, <\/span>others<\/span> because they are very interested in <\/span>acquiring <\/span>practical experience and leveling a path to a workplace upon graduation. Sometimes conflicts arise between the academic requirements and the requirements of the architects’ office<\/span> (i.e. the industry)<\/span>. Against this background, I greatly appreciate the framework that allows work and studies to be combined <\/span>as an integral part of <\/span>the field of studies.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In spite of summer holidays<\/span>,<\/span> it was possible to meet foreign <\/span>students<\/span> working in HAMK Tech. They <\/span>had<\/span> arrived for their studies <\/span>at HAMK <\/span>from abroad, and in general they were smiling and satisfied, and to our question<\/span> they replied that they were so <\/span>also <\/span>during <\/span>the winter<\/span> months<\/span>(!). <\/span>Talking <\/span>to<\/span> them,<\/span> we <\/span>have <\/span>realized how flexible the curriculum is, how much it allows for significant integration <\/span>with<\/span> work in the industry and adaptation to the lifestyle <\/span>and needs <\/span>of each and every student. An inseparable <\/span>attribute<\/span> of the course of studies is job security after graduation. We realized that the curricula in the various tracks are very sensitive to the state of the labor market<\/span>. W<\/span>e know how important this is against the back<\/span>drop<\/span> of the changes in the post-<\/span>pandemic<\/span> period, which <\/span>has <\/span>caused shocks and loss of sources of <\/span>employment<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

As architects, we really liked the new, multi-purpose building: the spacious spaces, which create a flowing connection between them, and between interior and exterior, the elegant and practical architectural language. We liked the combination of light wood and <\/span>lime<\/span> green and <\/span>tangerine <\/span>orange colors, and the refined furniture. <\/span>This refers<\/span>, for example, of the entrance to the library. <\/span>All in all <\/span><\/span>\u2014 <\/span><\/span>we were in a building of intens<\/span>ive<\/span> activity<\/span>, used <\/span>by <\/span>so <\/span>many people, yet the design was so delicate<\/span>! It was <\/span>in complete contrast to the anti-vandal design we know from public buildings elsewhere.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

We <\/span>have <\/span>asked ourselves how <\/span>this calm optimism is achieved <\/span>at the <\/span>H\u00e4meenlinna<\/span> University Centre<\/span>. <\/span>We<\/span> formulated an answer for ourselves, although not on a research basis, but certainly from a <\/span>profound c<\/span>onvi<\/span>ction; namely that <\/span>the environment and the educational activity of the campus are saturated with attention to the users, with sensitivity to their needs<\/span> and with awareness of the possibilities of collaborations in the context of a changing world.<\/span> The result is an atmosphere of invested and investing crea<\/span>tivity<\/span>, and th<\/span>is<\/span> atmosphere permeates the people, the surrounding space, the horizon of <\/span>possible<\/span> future<\/span>s<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
