Jenni K\u00e4m\u00e4r\u00e4inen is a third year student of Business Administration at HAMK. Her exchange destination is the Vorarlberg University Of Applied Sciences in Austria. Here she tells us about experiences on the preparation for the exchange.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

What was the process for choosing your destination for the exchange? What countries did you shortlist for your exchange and how did you zero down to the one that you will be going to?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The pro<\/span>cess of choosing the school I wanted to go study at began with reaching out to one of HAMK\u2019s international coordinators Annina Herala-Hemmil\u00e4,\u00a0\u00a0who helped me with the whole process of choosing the destination. So first I looked through the partner schools that are working together with HAMK. After that I picked\u00a0 2-<\/span>3 countries that were\u00a0 \u00a0interesting for me and looked through the websites of these countrie<\/span>\"\"s\u2019\u00a0schools.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I wanted to see which kind of programmes they were offering and how demanding the courses would be. In the end I chose the school that had the clearest website, and all the information was easy to find in English because that created security that the people in this country know how to communicate in English. The countries that I would have liked to go to were Italy, Belgium and Austria but the country I chose was Austria because of the location in central Europe and also becaus<\/span>e I could find the information on their website so easily, also I wanted to see the mountains of course. I also wanted the country to be a European country, so for example in case of health issues, I would get same treatment with the same amount of money as the local people do.<\/p>\n

What\u00a0were\u00a0you looking forward to the most from your exchange period?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

I was mostly looking forward to\u00a0meeting\u00a0new people and getting to know new\u00a0and\u00a0different cultures as well as gaining some new skills,\u00a0e.g.,\u00a0English\u00a0skills\u00a0and professional skills\u00a0related to my studies.<\/span><\/p>\n

What preparations did you make for the exchange?<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I had to make a list o<\/span>f all the things I would\u00a0need\u00a0to\u00a0take with me\u00a0to\u00a0the exchange destination. For\u00a0example,\u00a0all the documents, Covid\u00a0certification, insurance\u00a0and\u00a0plans\u00a0to\u00a0buy\u00a0the plane tickets\u00a0early enough\u00a0so\u00a0they\u00a0would be cheaper. I also had to look\u00a0if I would need\u00a0a\u00a0new\u00a0addition to my phone connection so it would work\u00a0outside Finland too,\u00a0and\u00a0I\u00a0had to make sure that my\u00a0bank\u00a0card would\u00a0work in other countries as well.\u00a0One of the topics\u00a0on\u00a0this list was also\u00a0to consider\u00a0which type of clothing\u00a0I would need to take with me\u00a0(both\u00a0summer clothes and winter clothes because I would\u00a0be spending the autumn\/winter semester\u00a0in Austria.)\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What was the application process like for you?<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The application process was\u00a0surprisingly\u00a0easier\u00a0than\u00a0what\u00a0I expected it to be.\u00a0First,\u00a0I had to apply for the exchange\u00a0just by\u00a0filling\u00a0in\u00a0one application and then I had to write\u00a0a\u00a0motivation letter\u00a0and that\u2019s it. But after I got\u00a0accepted,\u00a0I had to\u00a0do\u00a0another\u00a0similar\u00a0application for the school\u00a0in Austria.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How did you choose your courses?\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

I actually wanted to select courses that I hadn\u2019t taken already at HAMK. At HAMK I am focusing my studies on financing and accounting, so I also wanted to take some courses related to that, for example early-stage financing course. But all the other courses were more about leadership, human resources, and international business management in gen<\/span>eral. I also wanted to learn a new\u00a0language,\u00a0so I chose to study\u00a0German\u00a0a little bit,\u00a0also because German is a big business language nowadays.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

When did you leave for the exchange? What is the time-period of your exchange? \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

My exchange semester started on 23 August 2021 and ends on 16 December 2021. I flew here almost a week earlier just to ge<\/span>t used to the place before\u00a0school\u00a0started.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Have did y<\/strong>ou\u00a0manag<\/strong>e\u00a0to find an apartment?\u202f\u202f<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I found the apar<\/span>tment and I think it was easier than what I expected because the school where I was going to had sent me very informative emails about the apartment arrangements. They sent a list of apartments that were available for students and there you could see the locations of the apartments, what they looked like and how expensive they were. After choosing one, I had to send an application for the apartment and then later I received confirmation and had to pay a deposit payment – t<\/span>hat\u2019s it. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Did you get an Erasm<\/strong>us gra<\/strong>nt for the exchang<\/strong>e?\u202f Did\u202fit\u202fcover your living costs there? Did you get any Kela financial a<\/strong>id for your exchange pe<\/strong>riod abroad?\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

I did\u00a0get\u00a0an Erasmus grant for the\u00a0exchange,\u00a0and I think it is a good amount of\u00a0money,\u00a0but it only covers the\u00a0food costs you will have every month.\u00a0So,\u00a0it is\u00a0definitely\u00a0g<\/span>ood\u00a0to also apply for\u00a0Kela\u00a0financial aid because that\u00a0will for sure\u00a0cover your rental costs\u00a0every month.\u00a0And if you want to do something else besides\u00a0studying,\u00a0you should have some money of your own for that.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How did COVID affect your exchange plans and subsequently your\u202ffuture plans\u202fof going for it?\u202f\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Covid didn\u2019t actually <\/span>have that big\u00a0<\/span>a\"\"n effect on\u00a0<\/span>my exchange plans other than\u00a0that\u00a0I had to make sure I would have 2 shots of vaccine and\u00a0certification\u00a0of that\u00a0and also\u00a0had to look up what the\u00a0airlines would need\u00a0me to prove\u00a0and the countries I was flying through.\u00a0But other than\u00a0that,\u00a0it didn\u2019t\u00a0luckily\u00a0affect\u00a0me\u00a0that much and I also had to make sure I had enough masks with me.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
