It is never too late to participate in a student exchange program – Maritta Kitti’s Erasmus story

0

Maritta Kitti is currently during her last training at the Hospital in Spain. She is perfecting her Spanish language and enjoying their beautiful, sunny beaches and warm water. She proves that Erasmus not only is an opportunity to develop your professional and language skills but is also a chance to relax and benefit from anything the other country has to offer.

maritta-kittiTell us a little about yourself and why did you decide to participate in Erasmus program?

I am Maritta Kitti, a nursing student at HAMK. As soon as I started to study, I decided to go to exchange at some point. Since I´m now 53 years old, I thought that it’s now or never. I have been dreaming of working abroad as a nurse one day and this is a step towards that.

Where did you go and why? What was the most challenging part of studying abroad?

I am now in Almería, Southern Spain, doing my last training at the local Hospital Universitario Torrecárdenas. I have studied Spanish years ago and I thought it would be nice to learn some more in real life. I also thought that I could manage with my English here, but practically nobody here speaks English.

So, I really needed to speak and understand Spanish and it hasn’t always been very easy. But somehow everything has worked out well and now I’ve been living here for a month.

If anyone is interested in coming here or anywhere else at any age to be an exchange student, I highly recommend it!

I love the sea and the warm weather. My apartment is just a few minutes from the beach and I spend a lot of time there swimming and reading. Spanish people are very friendly and easy-going. If I need any kind of help, somebody is always willing to be there for me.

Erasmus arranges a lot of programs: parties, trips, evening events, beach days etc. Everybody has a local mentor who helps with everyday problems and questions of any kind.

Say a few words to students who are considering participating in Erasmus.

If anyone is interested in coming here or anywhere else at any age to be an exchange student, I highly recommend it! It is a unique experience you will always remember!
