This text will focus on the timber sales on Finland and Spain, and how different they are.

In Finland, timber market is one of the pillars of our economy. This process starts by a forest owner or a company’s forest that needs harvesting. Usually, a forest expert is contacted to create a harvesting plan, and later it would be followed by the machinery experts, lumberjacks and the people necessary to do the harvesting. According to Metsähallitus, (n.d.), when selling the timber, there are four ways of timber sales:

Stumpage sale: It’s the most common timber sale method in Finland, the forest owner sells standing timber, the buyer is responsible for the harvesting and transportation, and the payment is based on a stumpage price.

Delivery sale: The forest owner delivers timber to the roadside and is responsible for the harvesting. The payment is based on a delivery price.

Roadside sale: The timber is sold as ready-made roadside timber, and the sale is made without prior contact.

Mill delivery sale: The timber is delivered all the way to the mill, and this method is often used for large delivery volumes of timber.

To determine the timber price there are also different ways:

Stumpage price: This method is used in stumpage sales; the buyer is responsible for the harvesting and the transport. Also, estimated harvesting and transport costs have been already deducted from the price paid to the forest owner.

Delivery price: This method is used in delivery sales and roadside sales. The payment includes harvesting and local transportation carried out by the forest owner.

Mill price: This method includes harvesting costs and transportation to the mill. It is often used in mill delivery sales.

Picture: Finland’s timber trade soars 18% in 2024, reaching 48.8 million m3. (2025). https://www.globalwood.org/news/2025/news_20250303b.htm

The timber price always varies, even between similar harvesting sites, because the timber sale is not only about timber, but about other factors that can affect the timber quality as harvesting, storage, and transportation. Also, the tree species, the average stem size, the timber quality, the harvesting method, the stand size, the terrain conditions, the road network that connects the stand, the transport distances, and the market situation, among other things, are the key factors that can affect the timber price.

Continuing with the timber sale process, after the plan of marked stand, it is needed to request quotations, and later to compare offers from different buyers, although this is only necessary in some of the timber sales methods, then when the owner chooses one of the offers they need a timber sale contract. Before the harvesting the forest owner needs to do the forest use declaration at least before 14 days from the harvesting.

According to Metsähallitus, (n.d.), when the harvesting is done based on the plan made by a forest expert, there are many different harvesting methods, it can be a clear-cut if the stand is mature enough, but it can also, and usually, be a silvicultural need like:

First thinning: This is used to reduce stand density, improve the quality of the remaining trees and increase the growth.

Commercial thinning: This is used to accelerate the growth of the remaining trees, improve quality and increase the future sawlog yield.

Regeneration felling: This is used when a forest reaches maturity, then the stand is harvested and a new tree generation is stablished.

Continuous cover forestry harvests: This is a selective thinning and gap cuttings that aim to maintain continuous tree cover.

After the harvest is done, then the cut logs need to be measured to determine the correct price. Then the payment is done and the taxation. Later, the timber is transported to the sawmill, and the wood is procured there.

In Spain forestry and silviculture, it’s not very important for our economy. The process is simpler than in Finland.

In Spain also most of the forest stands are monocultures, mostly eucalyptus or pine.

Picture: Villanueva, J. The first step is to plan and evaluate the forest owner forest, a forest expert evaluates the volume, quality, the tree species, and other characteristics of the forest to create start the harvesting plan. Here is where the timber is priced based on the market situation, the quality of the wood, the tree species, the volume, among other things.

The second step is to get the permits and authorizations from the city hall.

The third step is for the forest expert specialised only on timber taxation to calculate the price of the timber and create a plan of a marked stand. In this step the selling method is already taken into consideration. According to Rivas (2025), there are two types:

Standing selling: This method is for selling the timber before being cut. The responsibility of harvesting and transportation is transferred to the buyer.

Roadside selling: This method sells the timber once is cut and stored, the seller is the responsible for harvesting, but the transportation is responsibility of the buyer.

The next step is to negotiate the best offer and find a buyer, usually is a company.

Finally, the forest stand must be checked by a forest expert to ensure that the harvesting has been done correctly and that follows the environmental law.

After seeing how each country works, we can appreciate that even if each country has their own laws and requirements for timber sales, still there are a lot of similarities between each other as the procedures followed and the quality control after the harvesting. Also, the responsibilities of the buyer and the seller are almost the same. Although, Spain has fewer timber sales methods and more permits and authorizations are needed.

References

Rivas, M.
