“My name is Javier Ravines. I am mechanical engineer living and working in Finland – so far. I have done my bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and Production Technology and master degree in Mechanical Engineering, specialized in Laser Technology. Graduated on 2011 from HAMK and 2015 from LUT.
I come from Perú – South America. And I chose Finland mainly because my older brother. He came as an exchange student here, then I came to visit him one summer and fall in love with Finland. TBH, that was probably the main reason, but it became even more interesting when I found out about the great reputation on education and services that Finland has.
Now I work as an entrepreneur providing engineering services to companies. We are mainly focused on research & development, product development, prototyping and testing. Between this job and graduation, I did probably what any graduated would do, apply and apply for jobs. I noticed that the job market was pretty low so I decided to start something of my own. It was quite difficult at the beginning, many emails – to not say hundreds – were sent to different companies around Finland and luckily, few of them replied.
For people who think if they should study mechanical engineering, I would say to go for it. Studying time is probably the best time in life. I would say to new students to try to involve yourself in activities, workshops, seminars, etc. as much as you can, even if it might seem useless or loss of time, but the bigger your circle, the more chances you have in the future to build a good network. Also, to have a good use of the “laboratory/practices” times – because it gives you a great basics to know what you will be doing in the future – and to try to be friendly and open minded – cus who doesn’t like friendly and open minded people? 🙂
